For your evenings in Wanaka there is plenty to choose from - depending on what you are looking for! Most of the bars have pool tables and almost all will have a big log fire – perfect for winter evenings! For quiet drinks Fincheys is a nice stylish bar, or Speights Ale House – outside tables positioned for a perfect view of the lake. If you want a bit of a dance Shooters has a large dance floor – it does tend to have a fairly young crowd, and plays Top 40 and hip-hop. When the rugby is on the town really kicks off – the pubs will be crowded, most have big screens and the atmosphere is fantastic! No town is complete without an Irish pub – or two! Slainte and Scruffy Murphys provide the Guinness for Wanaka!

Slainte: Most of the staff are true Irish and Guinness and cider are on tap! Doesn't tend to be too rowdy or crowded, and has dress code – no jeans or hats. Meals are generally under $15 and you won't walk away hungry – try the stew or corned beef. Benches and tables are set outside to enjoy the afternoon sun. Open 12pm – midnight daily. Pint about $7, wine by the glass is $5 to $9.

Scruffy's: A popular choice for an après ski mulled wine! The fire and comfy sofas give this bar a really cosy feel. Often hosts small events such as "Scruffy Idol" which make for some fun nights! The food is good – with usual bar menu, plus pizzas and all good sized!

Shooters: One of the best located bars in Wanaka - and one of our favourites! Right across from the lake, it's a ideal spot to grab a post-ski drink and watch the sun sink into the mountains. When the sun goes down, move from the outside patio to the real log fire inside, or hit the dance floor to some top 40 cheese, hip hop, or live bands! Drinks are well priced at $4 for a pint, and around $5 for mixed drinks. Jugs of beer and cheap pints at happy hour.

Apartment One: Wanaka's only dedicated "club." A converted apartment A1 is small and stays open late!

Red Rock: Popular with locals and mountain staff, this bar is good fun, particularly Fridays! Music is usually "pop-ish" with live bands sometimes. Like most bars in town, there is a fireplace surrounded by comfy couches! The tables are whiskey barrels surrounded by high chairs, and there is no lack of television screens for game nights! It can get a bit packed on weekends or when the rugby is on, so its best to get there early at these times. A wide choice of drinks – probably the best deal is the jugs of tap beer for $7. Also serves bar snacks, and has a good main menu.

Puzzling World
Wanaka: Set in the heart of the Southern Lakes, on the shore of Lake Wanaka (one of the few remaining lakes in its natural state), this town is the gateway to the stunning Mount Aspiring National Park. Perfect for those who want somewhere with all the buzz of a ski town on a slightly smaller scale than Queenstown! Close to the magical Fiordland, the area is renowned for its glaciers and the stunning mountains on all sides provide a skiers dream – with four ski fields, the height of the fields, reliable snow, dry powder and varied terrain make it one of the top ski areas in New Zealand. The town itself has a huge choose of places to eat, drink and relax, and with the perfect balance of lakeside serenity and ski town vibe, it is a perfect destination for families and party-goers alike!

Unique Attractions:

Puzzling World: With a clock that has run backwards since 2000, a huge green labyrinth and the Leaning Tower of Wanaka, a café full of puzzles to solve, and excellent opportunities for photographic tricks, Puzzling world is a mini science centre! Take a challenge to complete the maze, try walking through the slanted room (without wobbling!) and if you can’t figure out the solutions to the puzzles, staff will give hints so you don’t lose sleep over them!

Cardrona Hotel: One of the oldest hotels in New Zealand, this is the central attraction of the small town of Cardrona. Set among the hills of the Crown Range, the hotel is still decorated in the style of the time, making it a truly unique experience!

The Skiing: Treble Cone: the largest of the South Island ski and snowboard areas, the uncrowded slopes and high speed six man chairlift, the enormous terrain variety can suit all levels, and if you’re an advanced skier, you will be kept busy checking out the “phat” backcountry powder and challenging chutes!

Cardrona: everyone is welcome at Cardrona! The relaxed and friendly atmosphere is favoured by families, skiers and snowboarders from near and far! There are specialist slopes for beginners, wide groomed slopes for intermediates, steep chutes for advanced and one of the best terrain parks for freestyle lovers!

Snow Farm: New Zealand’s only commercial Nordic Ski area! The Waiorau Snow Farm offers classic trails of an international standard, and lessons suitable for those new to cross country and experienced in the sport alike!

Snow Park: This is New Zealand’s first all mountain Freestyle Terrain Park! Without the limitations of normal mountain terrain parks, Snow Park builds terrain which will test all levels of freestyle skiers and boarders! The 40 floodlights around the Half Pipes and west side of the park give a great atmosphere for some twilight skiing, and the 8 Industry standard speakers give a real “park jam” vibe!!
